How can I change my habits? Well, the Model of Behavior Change provides a framework for how most individuals change in ways such as adopting new habits, modifying existing ones, or eliminating unwanted behaviors.
Stages of Change
Pre-Contemplation - This is before the individual has understood the problem that needs changing or is resisting the change. Educating those around you on healthy habits may help them identify issues and transition them into the next stage.
Contemplation - This is when the individual has acknowledged their need for change but hasn't committed to an action yet. When you're in this stage, it is important to build your motivation for change to truly occur.
Preparation - This is when the individual is planning to take actions and may be starting to take small steps in order to achieve this change. When you are in this stage, it is important to develop a clear and achievable plan. Achievable plans consist of feasible steps taking place in a timely manner.
Action - This is when the individual actively engages in new behaviors in order to implement this change. It is important to report your progress when in this stage.
Maintenance - During this stage, an individual has sustained their change and is working to resist potential relapse of their prior behavior. In order to transition onto the final stage, an individual can engage in ongoing monitoring and celebrate milestones.
Termination - The final stage of the model of change is when the individual has fully integrated into their new lifestyle and has no desire to change. This stage signifies that the change is permanent and the individual will not relapse.
